We all have dreams, but some of us never fully realize them. As seen with countless others who have faced extreme hardships, talent and tenacity are equally present in author, Brian Banks, who has realized many of his dreams. He is a law school graduate, educator, author, community leader andvisionary. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Brian shares the experiences of the underprivileged and disadvantaged. In spite of where he started, Brian always sensed that despite his small stature, he would take giant steps.

As a product of both a low-income and a single-parent family, Brian is personally and keenly aware of the difficult choices that today’s youth face. He is intimately familiar with a living in a home environment that was not full of love nor conducive for learning and growth. Brian saw a clear path – graduate from college, graduate from law school, become a prominent attorney, and then sit on the bench as an officer of the court. However, many things contributed to him taking a slightly different path. In his book, It Had 2 Happen: The Agony of Success, Brian describes a defining moment of his life on a predestined day in 1999 when he stood before an Oakland County Circuit Court judge who spoke life into him and acknowledged that she saw greatness on the inside of him, that he did not even know still existed. This was Brian’s “Revelation Day”.

Brian currently holds both a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Master of Education in Educational Leadership & Administration from Wayne State University. He has earned a Juris Doctor with a Concentration in Criminal Law from Michigan State University College of Law, and a Ph.D. in Public Policy & Administration from Walden University. Education has been a prime tool in shaping Brian’s my growth and making him the person he is today. Brian has been a third-grade teacher and adjunct professor.

On November 6, 2012, Mr. Banks was duly elected by the people of the 1st District to The Michigan House of Representatives, representing Northeast Detroit, Grosse Pointe Woods, Grosse Pointe Shores, and Harper Woods. Representative Banks served on several committees and was re-elected in 2014 and 2016. Throughout his terms, Brian was an advocate for education and committed to ensuring that all children have access to the quality education – no matter where they live. Brian continues to be heavily involved in this community.

Mr. Banks is highly sought-after educator, organizer, assistant, community, political, legal mind and now, an author. Brian’s work currently involves mentoring teens and young adults. He is called upon as a keynote speaker for Youth Day services at churches, college-bound student workshops, second chance programs, criminal justice reform seminars, and many more. In his spare time, Brian enjoys traveling the world, shopping, dining out, cooking for family and friends, good gospel music, and relaxing at home.
